# Do creators earn commission when someone uses the code without clicking?

Sometimes, and the difference is the single most consequential detail in a code deal. If your code is commissionable, attribution happens at redemption and you earn with no click anywhere: ShopMy and Shopify Collabs both work this way. If your deal only tracks the affiliate link and the code is just a discount, a buyer who types your code without clicking earns you exactly nothing.

## How to tell which deal you have

1. Ask the brand directly: "Is the code itself commissionable, or does commission only track through the link?" Get it in writing.
2. On platforms, check the deal terms: ShopMy shows code-attributed earnings; Shopify Collabs states that a sale attributes when the customer uses your discount code, not only your link.
3. Run the arithmetic test after a month: if the brand reports meaningful redemptions while your link clicks are near zero and your commission is also near zero, you have a link-only deal wearing a code costume.

## Why the click path undercounts code audiences

Code-driven buyers hear the code and go direct: different time, different device, no click. Affiliate cookies and windows never fire. The mechanics are laid out in [why copies do not show as clicks](/guides/code-copies-vs-link-clicks); the negotiation this enables, upgrading a discount-only code to a commissionable one, is in [how creators make money from codes](/guides/make-money-from-discount-codes).

## Protecting yourself either way

- Count your own copies so you know the size of the clickless path even when the deal ignores it.
- If the code is discount-only, still share it when it serves your audience, but weight your effort toward deals that pay on redemption.
- Ask what happens when coupon sites pick up your code: some programs strip credit for redemptions that arrive via aggregators, and you want that rule known up front.
