# How influencer promo codes actually work

An influencer promo code is created by the brand, in their checkout system or through a platform like ShopMy or Shopify Collabs. The brand configures two separate things: the discount the buyer gets and, if the deal includes it, the commission you earn when the code is used. The code doubles as attribution: every redemption is provably yours, click or no click.

## The chain, step by step

1. **The brand creates the code** in their commerce platform and ties it to a discount rule: percent off, fixed amount, free gift, or free shipping.
2. **The payout gets attached, or not.** A commissionable code credits you per redemption. A discount-only code helps your audience and builds the relationship but pays you nothing directly; know which one you were handed. The taxonomy is in [promo code vs affiliate link](/guides/promo-code-vs-affiliate-link).
3. **You distribute it**: spoken in content, shown on screen, and parked somewhere copyable, because the code travels by voice and memory in ways links cannot.
4. **Attribution happens at checkout.** Affiliate networks treat unique codes as an attribution mechanism equivalent to a tracked link; ShopMy and Shopify Collabs both credit commissionable codes on redemption without any click.
5. **Reporting flows back**: the brand sees redemptions; you see whatever your program reports plus whatever you measure yourself, which is where [copy counting](/guides/code-copies-vs-link-clicks) earns its keep.

## What makes a code deal good

- A code that is easy to say and hard to typo: short, no ambiguous characters.
- Commission attached to redemption, not only to clicks, so device switching cannot cost you.
- A stated expiry, and your card auto-pauses on it, so followers never chase a dead discount.
- Written terms: rate, cookie or window rules, exclusions, and whether coupon sites using your code strips your credit.

## The creator's operational job

Once the brand mints the code, everything remaining is distribution and bookkeeping: keep every live code findable in one place, retire dead ones, and keep the numbers that prove your side of the deal. That job is what a [code-first page](/guides/promo-code-link-in-bio) exists for, and the multi-brand version of it is covered in [organizing multiple brand partnerships](/guides/organize-multiple-brand-partnerships).
