# How to manage expired creator codes

An expired code is a trust problem before it is a revenue problem: the follower who typed it at checkout blames you, not the brand. Manage codes as a lifecycle: record every expiry the day a deal starts, let dated codes pause themselves, keep old content pointed at editable cards instead of raw codes, and replace rather than delete so returning traffic sees the current deal.

## Why expiry hurts creators disproportionately

Your content outlives your campaigns. A tutorial from last year still sends viewers to whatever code it names, and evergreen video is exactly the traffic you cannot edit reply-by-reply. Each dead-code checkout is a follower learning your codes cannot be trusted, and unlike a missed commission, that compounds.

## The lifecycle system

1. **Intake:** the day a deal lands, record code, rate, and expiry. The [partnership tracker template](/templates/promo-code-tracker) has columns for exactly this.
2. **Automate the ending:** put the expiry on the code's card so it pauses itself on the date; a paused card tells arriving followers the deal ended rather than letting them fail at checkout.
3. **Renew or replace:** expiring codes are a renewal prompt one week out: ask the brand for the next code, and swap it into the same card so history and old-content traffic carry over.
4. **Never let raw codes into evergreen surfaces:** video descriptions and captions should carry the code for immediate viewers plus the page URL for future ones, since the page is the only surface you can still edit next year.

## The numbers expired codes leave behind

Copies arriving at a paused card are not waste; they are demand with nowhere to go, and the cleanest renewal pitch you will ever have: followers kept trying this code after it expired. Bring that curve to the brand, per [reporting engagement](/guides/report-code-engagement-to-brands), and the expiry conversation becomes a rate conversation.
