# Promo-code tracking for creators: what you can and cannot know

Without access to a brand's checkout data, a creator cannot see code redemptions. What you can measure is the chain before the checkout: how many people saw your codes, how many tapped through to the brand, and how many copied a code. Copies are the number click-based tools miss, and for code-driven deals they are the strongest interest signal you can own.

## The measurement chain

| Signal | What it tells you | Who can see it |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Page views | How many people your content sent to your codes | You |
| Shop taps | Who clicked through to the brand's site | You, and the brand via your link's tracking |
| Code copies | Who took the code itself, including people who never tap the link | Only you, and only if your page counts them |
| Redemptions and sales | Who actually bought with your code | Only the brand, unless your program reports it to you |

The honest boundary sits between the third and fourth rows. A copy is not a sale, and a page that counts copies should never claim attribution. What copies give you is the shape of demand: which brand, which code, which day, from which content.

## Why copies matter more than clicks for code deals

A buyer who hears your code in a video often goes straight to the brand's site on their own, sometimes hours later or on a different device, and types or pastes the code at checkout. No click on your link ever happens, so click analytics record nothing. Industry practice on the brand side treats codes as exactly this kind of clickless attribution. The creator-side mirror of that is counting copies: the moment someone takes the code from your page. The full argument is in [why code copies do not appear as link clicks](/guides/code-copies-vs-link-clicks).

## A practical tracking setup

1. Put every code on one page you control, with per-card counting, so numbers accumulate in one place instead of across captions.
2. Attach the video or post a code came from to its card, so you can line up content with code interest.
3. Watch copies per page view per card. A card with high views and few copies usually has a weak offer or unclear framing; high copies with few shop taps means buyers are going direct, which is normal for codes.
4. When you report to a brand, send views, taps, and copies labeled as engagement, and let their redemption data complete the picture. A workflow for that is in [how to report code engagement to brands](/guides/report-code-engagement-to-brands).

## What to be skeptical of

- Any creator tool claiming it can prove your code drove sales without the brand's data. It cannot.
- Click counts presented as buyer counts. Bots, previews, and curiosity taps inflate clicks; copies are a deliberate act.
- Dashboards that mix your numbers with modeled estimates without labeling which is which.
