How to share promo codes on Instagram

Reviewed by the usecode.sh team on

Instagram gives a code three usable surfaces: text in captions and Stories, the link sticker in Stories, and your bio. Caption links are not tappable for almost everyone, and a bio holds 150 characters, so the reliable system is one bio link to a page that holds every code, plus the code itself written in the content where you mention it.

What you will end up with

One permanent bio link that never changes again, with every code you promote reachable behind it in a single tap, and the code still written where a follower who screenshots the post can read it.

Step by step

  1. Put one permanent link in your bio

It points at a page holding every code you promote, so "link in bio" always means the same thing. Instagram allows up to five bio links but shows only the first, and a bio holds 150 characters, so it cannot hold the codes themselves.

  2. Write the code in the caption anyway

People screenshot and retype. Make the code short enough to survive that, because a caption is not tappable and the typed path is the one most of your audience will take.

  3. Pair text and sticker in Stories

Put the code as a text overlay and a link sticker pointing at that code's card, so tappers and typers both get through. The link sticker is available to accounts in good standing with no follower minimum.

  4. When a campaign ends, update the page rather than the bio

The bio link never changes. Editing one card retires a deal everywhere at once, including on posts from six months ago that are still bringing people in.

What each Instagram surface can and cannot do

  • Bio

    Codes
    As text, cramped
    Links
Up to 5 external links; only the first shows
    Notes
150-character limit including the codes you paste in
  • Captions and comments

    Codes
    As text
    Links
Not clickable (a small Meta Verified caption-link test exists; do not rely on it)
    Notes
Followers must retype or memorize the code
  • Stories

    Codes
    As text overlay
    Links
Link sticker, available to accounts in good standing
    Notes
Disappears in 24 hours unless highlighted
  • Broadcast channels

    Codes
    As text
    Links
    Tappable links in channel messages
    Notes
The one mass-message surface with working links

Measuring what Instagram will not show you

Instagram tells you nothing about what happens to a code after you post it. A code page fills that in: views per campaign, taps to the brand, and copies, which is how you learn whether a Reel actually moved a code or just got watched.

What goes wrong

  • Rotating the bio link per campaign. Followers arriving from an older Reel meet the wrong offer, and you will be editing the bio forever.
  • Putting codes only in captions. Captions are not clickable and produce no numbers, so you cannot tell which brand's code your audience actually wants.
  • Relying on the caption-link test. Instagram is trialling tappable caption links with a small group of Meta Verified subscribers, with no rollout commitment; building a system on it now is building on sand.

How to tell it worked

Instagram tells you nothing about what happens to a code after you post it. Watch instead for copies per card in the days after a post: a Reel that drives copies is working even when it drives few taps, and that gap is the normal signature of a code that travels by screenshot.
